My personal approach to brass instrumental tuition is to give my student the tools and inspiration they need to get the most out of their time when developing their skills at home.

My aim is to ensure every student knows:

  • What to play
  • How to approach the material they are playing
  • What they should be aiming to achieve

Where appropriate I use specially created 'playalong' tracks to help students in their sessions. This is especially helpful in what could be described as 'dry' playing (scales, range exercises etc.) so students can play along with a funky or jazzy backing track.

I provide tuition for beginners, students who want to develop their existing skills or want to venture into the world of jazz (incorporating jazz theory, 'swing' phrasing and improvisation) as well as advanced players and professionals.

One of my strengths is being able to explain abstract concepts in an easy to understand way through a series of different skills (visualisations, clapping, singing etc.). These skills have proved to be very important when explaining musical concepts such as:

  • correct breathing techniques
  • extending range
  • sound production
  • note articulation
  • sound projection

I routinely organise recording projects for students with bespoke backing tracks to document progress and build self-esteem through high quality recordings to share with family and friends. In addition, this provides an extra focus to sessions as there is an ‘end-goal’; a product to be created and enjoyed.

I believe there is a reason that people play musical instruments and not work them; it's supposed to be fun!
